I only had one crash in Wytchwood, and the game had autosaved just before, so I didn’t lose any progress. An example would be perhaps a trader, where you can trade certain ingredients for more hard to get or less common ones. With that being said, I do quite like the story that Wytchwood tells, I just wish there were some quality of life improvements. When you aren’t doing that, then you’re backtracking to various areas to make sure you have the required ingredients, and stockpiling other commonly used ones so you don’t run out. You quickly realize that the gameplay boils down to talking to NPC’s, just to figure out what they want from you so you can craft the requisite item and move forward. The big issue I have though is that the gameplay gets very repetitive after a while. This may tell you useful information about how to approach various tasks or overcome various obstacles. This lets you inspect your surroundings, along with the enemies and NPC’s around you. Instead, every creature has some sort of weakness that you can uncover using the “Witch’s eye” mechanic. You may need an axe to chop lumber and dismember beasts, while you may need a trowel or some other instrument to harvest other items. The story is interesting though, and as you progress you get new tools with which to take on the various harvesting tasks and enemies. In essence, it is a lot of crafting, material harvesting, rinse and repeat. Most of the quests are fetch quests, you either go and get ingredients to make a potion that lets you solve a problem, or you go and do various tasks, which may require you to use the Witch’s spells and potions to solve puzzles. There is an option for No Button Holding for crafting and opening doors. The gameplay is simple. There is an option to turn off the character portrait movement during dialog as well. The UI size can be changed to increase the text size for everything in the game.Ĭamera Sway can be turned off to reduce motion sickness. The most important text, the names of the ingredients, spells, and reagents is in large text, as well as the major dialogue boxes with important npcs. The text size varies throughout the game and is fairly high contrast. There is a detailed map of your current area that shows quest markers, and you are able to zoom. Your currently tracked quest appears on the screen, but there are no arrows or visual indicators of where to go next. The journal tracks all of the quests you are currently able to work on, and the sub-sections of each of these questlines, and provides very clear guidance on each step. The placement of portals usually makes the distance you need to travel fairly short, especially if you open the portals to new areas as soon as you are able. You able to return to that spot to retrieve your dropped items. When you lose all your hearts, you are transported back to the witch's hut and some of your inventory is dropped where you were standing. You can always craft a Hearthseed to return to your home area in the game, if you run out of ingredients for it you can craft 1 anyway so that you don't get stuck. The game autosaves frequently and you can quit at anytime and resume right where you left off. 7 Getting Started accessibility features. The result is an unusual game that challenges assumptions of who deserves justice, particularly in the familiar tales that crop up with unexpected endings. The forest in which you live is always changing with new characters to meet and stories to discover. After all, how will they ever learn if you don’t teach them the moral of the story? Who deserves forgiveness and who punishment. As you progress you are pushed to make judgments about your fellow inhabitants. You explore the allegorical world of tall tales, colourful personas and fantastical narratives. You then research and concoct spells to enact on the populace. Play involves gathering, collecting, growing and crafting ingredients for your potions: toxic toadstools, eye of newt and bottled fear. That much is relatively common, here though, your role is to pass judgement upon a capricious cast of characters and creatures. You are an old witch of the woods and must explore the countryside, collect magical ingredients and brew enchantments. Wytchwood is an adventure in a land of gothic fables and fairytales.
