The first Dragon Quest Builders worked so well precisely because it was a bespoke and focused alternative to Minecraft, that also tapped into decades-old Dragon Quest lore.īy contrast, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is just an excessive grind with the kind of procedurally generated content that Minecraft does much better.Īt least I finally have the Sword of Erdrick in Dragon Quest Builders 2 but while I poured a lot of time and effort into the first game, I think I won’t bother anymore with this one and that’s a shame. Whatever happened to this game I really hope Square Enix undoes it with the sequel. The issue is that if you want to get something like the Sword of Erdrick (shown above), you first need 3,000 hearts to unlock the island which contains Orihalcum to make the sword and then another 3,000 hearts to unlock another island that contains the dragon you have to slay to get the recipe for the sword.Ĭompare that to the first game, where the Sword of Erdrick is an unlock once you have the necessary materials and workbench, which doesn’t require countless mind-numbing hours of farming hearts and then going on a search quest on a procedurally generated island. The issue is that instead of collating all the available hearts from the other islands onto the Isle of Awakening, you have to effectively build up a community from scratch and farm hearts that way. While on the main story islands the hearts level up your base, on the Isle of Awakening you use them to unlock recipes and these explorer islands. These help you level up your bases but these hearts are also collected on the Isle of Awakening. Over the course of the game, your villagers drop little hearts when they are happy about something. While I think the procedurally generated approach was a mistake, as it just feels cheap after the first game, the issue is how you get access to these islands in the first place.
